How to help?

Are you worried that a woman in your neighbourhood is experiencing partner violence?
Maybe you would like to support her, but don't know how to go about it?
That's where StoP comes in. We offer information and answers with practical guidance on moral courage and solidarity.

How can I help myself?

Some ways you can help:

Look

Don't look away. You probably suspect violence. You can recognise warning signs such as:

Withdrawal from social life

Inconsistencies in explaining injuries

Decisions are only made in consultation with the partner

Change of behaviour and fear

Address

  • Pay attention to sensitive and considerate behavior and body language

  • Listen and believe her!

  • Stick with it, but don't push her

  • Condemn the violence! This can be a clear signal for those affected

  • The woman knows about your willingness to help and could contact you

  • Maybe she needs time

Act together

Do not trade without the knowledge or consent of the persons concerned!
Unless it is an acute violent situation.

Activate other neighbours and get support.

I hear or see an acute violent situation. What can I do?

Sometimes it means: act quickly. Be careful not to let the situation escalate further.

interrupt violence

Do you hear or see a violent situation? Interrupt her.

  • For example, ring the doorbell and ask for something, such as a charging cable or sugar.

  • The situation is briefly interrupted and those involved know that you have noticed the argument and could get help.

  • Don't put yourself in danger.

call the police

If you assume that you observe or hear acute violence, do not hesitate to call the police on the emergency number 110!

Better one call too many than one too few!

What is StoP? In a nutshell:

StoP is the project "Stadtteile ohne Partnergewalt", which means "Neighbourhoods without Partner Violence" and supports people in the neighbourhoods who want to show civil courage and show solidarity with women affected by partner violence. StoP has been active in various neighbourhoods in several German cities since 2010.

Partner violence/domestic violence occurs every day - in all social spheres. The victims are mainly women. Partner violence destroys the health and lives of all involved. The problem is that we talk about it too rarely, be it out of shame, fear or insecurity. Or because we believe it is a private matter.

But: Violence is not a private matter, it is a human rights violation!

By partner violence we mean violence perpetrated by male-identified persons, which originates in relation to partners and ex-partners. It is usually perpetrated in the home, often systematically over a long period of time.
